Q&A with Nathan Gilchrist

Nathan Gilchrist is a professional cricketer (fast bowler) who plays for Kent County Cricket Club. Nathan was born at Harare in Zimbabwe in 2000 and grew up in South Africa. His ambitions for this year are to win the County Championship with Kent CC and beyond that, to play for England through his eligibility of his father who is English.

Where did it all begin – how did you get into cricket?

I started playing cricket at the age of 7 while at prep school in South Africa. One
break time all the boys in my year were called into a room and we were asked if
we wanted to play cricket we should stay seated, and if not, we were allowed to leave. I was about to walk
out the door (not knowing what cricket was at the time!) When the coach called me back and said “You’re
playing cricket!”.

What has been your greatest sporting achievement?

Taking my first professional 5 wicket haul. It was something I could only dream of doing growing up. It was
a proud day for myself as well as my family.

What are your sporting aspirations for 2022 and beyond?

My aspiration for the 2022 season is to win the County Championship with Kent CCC as it’s the highest
achievement for a county to win the championship. My aspiration for myself beyond 2022 is to have a
successful career playing for England.

What motivates you to train and compete at the elite level?

My motivation comes from wanting to be the best I can be as well as to compete with the best players in the
world.

Do you have an athlete role model who inspires/ed you?

Growing up my biggest role model was Dale Steyn. He is one of the best bowlers to have ever played
international cricket and the passion he showed every time he had a ball in his hand was something I always
admired.

Where in the world would you most like to play cricket?

I would love to experience playing cricket in India. The passion the Indian fans have for cricket is amazing
and the atmosphere at any game I watch on TV is electric.

What advice do you have for young people looking to get in to cricket?

My one piece of advice would be to enjoy it as much as you can. Growing up, all I wanted to do was play
cricket because I loved it so much! And when you are having fun while doing something, you end up
playing better anyways!

How do you relax outside of cricket?

I have a few hobbies that keep me busy outside of cricket. I enjoy keeping active so playing golf is always
enjoyable. Reading is also a great way for me to relax and take my mind off of cricket.

How important is nutrition to your performances?

Nutrition has a huge impact on my performances. Without the right nutrition, my body would not be able to
meet the physical demands that cricket requires. Nutrition is also key for my recovery in order to make sure
I’m ready for the next training session or match.

How do Beet It Sport products help your performance?

Beet It Sport products help my performances by providing me with the various nutrients my body needs
which either aid recovery or reduce inflammation. Our season is very long, so being able to maintain a high
level of fitness for a long period of time is crucial, and that’s exactly what Beet It Sport’s products help me
do.
